“Park outside” vehicle recalls are rising — and it is not just an electric-car problem
Imagine receiving a recall notice that does not simply tell you to book your car in for a repair.
Instead, it says:
Do not park your vehicle in your garage. Keep it outside and away from buildings and other vehicles.
That sounds extreme, but these warnings are becoming increasingly common in the United States.
In the first seven months of 2026 alone, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recorded 17 separate “park outside” recall campaigns affecting about 1.7 million vehicles.
And the issue is broader than electric vehicles.
Recent recalls have involved everything from high-voltage batteries to power-steering wiring and even electric seat motors.
The common concern is simple: some electrical components can remain energised after the vehicle has been switched off. If a faulty component overheats, a fire can begin while the vehicle is sitting unattended.
That is why regulators and manufacturers sometimes tell owners to park outside until a permanent repair has been completed.
“Park outside” recalls are becoming much more common
NHTSA began specifically identifying “park outside” recalls in 2015.
At first, they were relatively unusual.
That has changed dramatically.
By July 31, 2026, there had already been 17 unique park-outside recall campaigns during the year.
That puts 2026 on track to be one of the busiest years yet for this type of safety warning.

The trend does not rise smoothly every year. There have been significant spikes and falls.
For example, 2023 was an unusually large year for the number of vehicles affected because major Hyundai and Kia recalls covered millions of vehicles.
But the broader pattern is clear: manufacturers and regulators are issuing these warnings much more frequently than they were a decade ago.
Nearly 1.7 million vehicles were affected in 2026 by July
The number of individual recall campaigns tells only part of the story.
Some recalls cover hundreds of thousands — or even more than a million — vehicles at once.
By the end of July 2026, around 1.7 million vehicles had been affected by park-outside recall campaigns during the year.
That already made 2026 the second-largest year shown in the available NHTSA data for the number of vehicles affected.

Separate estimates cited by automotive-safety reporting suggest that roughly 3.2 million vehicles currently have an unresolved park-outside recall in the United States.
That is an important distinction.
The 1.7 million figure refers to vehicles covered by recalls announced during 2026 so far.
The larger 3.2 million estimate includes vehicles from older recall campaigns that may still have an outstanding repair.
Why can a car catch fire when it is switched off?
Turning off a modern vehicle does not necessarily mean every electrical circuit inside it becomes completely powerless.
Today's cars contain far more electrical equipment than vehicles from previous decades.
That includes:
battery-management systems
electric power steering
power seats
control modules
starter systems
communications equipment
charging systems
high-voltage components in hybrids and EVs
Some circuits remain powered while the vehicle is parked.
Normally, that is completely safe.
The problem occurs when there is a defect.
A damaged electrical connection, stuck motor, short circuit or defective battery cell can continue drawing current and producing heat.
If temperatures rise high enough, surrounding material can ignite.
That is why some recalls specifically warn that a vehicle may catch fire even after the ignition has been turned off.
It is not just electric vehicles
There is an understandable tendency to associate vehicle fires with EV batteries.
High-voltage batteries are certainly one possible source of these recalls.
But the current wave of park-outside warnings demonstrates that the issue is much broader.
More than one million Jeep vehicles recalled
In June 2026, FCA recalled 1,076,999 Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles from model years 2021–2025.
The problem involved an electrical connection associated with the electric-hydraulic power-steering pump.
NHTSA said the fault could cause combustible material to overheat and potentially ignite.
At the time of its warning, NHTSA said it was aware of 51 fires and one injury likely connected to the issue.
Owners were instructed to park outside and away from other vehicles and buildings until repairs could be completed.
This is a good example of why calling the problem an “EV fire issue” would be misleading.
These Jeep vehicles were recalled because of an electrical power-steering problem.
A power-seat motor triggered a Kia Telluride recall
Another striking example involves something most drivers would never consider a serious fire risk:
the electric seat.
In July 2026, Kia recalled 462,869 Telluride SUVs from model years 2020–2024.
According to NHTSA, the front power-seat switch could become damaged or misaligned.
That could cause a seat motor to operate continuously.
A motor that keeps running can overheat — potentially resulting in a fire whether the vehicle is being driven or simply parked.
Kia had reported seven seat fires and 11 melted seat motors when NHTSA issued its warning.
Owners were instructed to park outside and away from other vehicles and structures until the repair had been performed.
The fix involves installing an electronic fuse assembly designed to stop continuous seat-motor operation.
Plug-in hybrid batteries can also create parked-vehicle fire risks
High-voltage batteries remain part of the picture as well.
More than 320,000 Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids have previously been subject to park-outside warnings because of potential high-voltage battery fires.
In cases like these, manufacturers may go a step further and tell owners not only to park outside but also not to charge the vehicle until a repair is completed.
Battery failures are particularly serious because lithium-ion cells can release large amounts of stored energy once thermal runaway begins.
But the important takeaway is that high-voltage batteries are only one of several possible causes.

A dramatic video that circulated in August 2026 shows a Zeekr 7X electric SUV catching fire beside a charging station in Ningbo, China.
Video footage shows sparks and flames emerging from underneath the vehicle before the fire rapidly intensifies.
However, this incident should not be confused with the U.S. NHTSA park-outside recalls discussed above.
It is a separate case.
Zeekr said the vehicle had previously been involved in a significant collision and had not subsequently been inspected or repaired through an authorised Zeekr service centre.
Some reports also state that the vehicle was parked beside the charger but was not actually connected to it when the fire began.
The final cause remains subject to investigation.
We include the footage because it demonstrates how quickly a vehicle fire can escalate — not because it proves that Zeekr vehicles are part of the current U.S. recall trend.
Why are these recalls increasing?
There is no single explanation.
Modern vehicles simply contain much more electrical technology.
Even conventional petrol-powered cars now contain dozens of electronic control modules, motors, sensors and powered accessories.
Hybrid and electric vehicles add high-voltage systems on top of that.
This means there are more components capable of developing an electrical fault.
It does not mean modern cars are automatically less safe.
Modern vehicles also contain sophisticated monitoring, protection and diagnostic systems that older cars did not have.
But increased electrical complexity creates new types of failure modes.
A problem that once might have involved a mechanical component can now involve wiring, software-controlled actuators or an electric motor that remains powered while the vehicle is unattended.
That appears to be one reason park-outside recalls have become more prominent.
Why “park outside” is such a serious instruction
The concern is not simply that the vehicle itself might be destroyed.
A car burning outdoors is dangerous.
A vehicle burning inside an attached garage can be significantly worse.
Fire can spread from the vehicle to:
the garage
adjoining rooms
neighbouring vehicles
nearby homes or apartment buildings
A parked vehicle can also catch fire when nobody is nearby to notice smoke or flames developing.
That is why manufacturers sometimes instruct owners to maintain distance from structures and other vehicles until a repair is available.
For people living in apartments or buildings with underground parking, following that instruction may be extremely inconvenient.
In some cases, replacement parts are not immediately available, meaning owners can spend weeks or months changing where they park.
What should you do if you receive a “park outside” recall?
The most important rule is simple:
Follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly.
If the recall says to park outside, park outside.
If it says to remain away from structures or other vehicles, follow the recommended separation.
If it says not to charge the vehicle, do not charge it until the manufacturer says the vehicle is safe.
Do not assume that turning the ignition off eliminates the risk.
Check your vehicle's VIN
Even if you have not received a recall letter, U.S. drivers can check their vehicle directly through NHTSA.

You can search using your vehicle's:
17-character VIN, or in many cases its licence plate.
The VIN can usually be found:
at the bottom-left corner of the windshield
on the vehicle-registration document
on some insurance documents
The NHTSA lookup will show whether your specific vehicle has an unrepaired safety recall.
If a safety recall is open, contact an authorised dealership for the manufacturer.
NHTSA says safety-recall repairs are provided free of charge by the manufacturer's dealership.
Do not assume that “no letter” means “no recall”
Recall notifications can take time to reach owners.
Vehicles may also have changed ownership or address since they were originally registered.
That means it is worth checking the VIN periodically rather than relying entirely on mailed notices.
NHTSA also offers the SaferCar app, which can notify owners when a new safety recall applies to a vehicle they have registered in the app.
The bigger picture
The rise of park-outside recalls tells us something about how dramatically cars have changed.
Modern vehicles are no longer primarily mechanical machines with a small amount of electronics added.
They are increasingly complex electrical and software-controlled systems.
That creates enormous benefits — better safety systems, efficiency, comfort and performance.
But it also creates new failure modes.
A high-voltage battery can overheat.
A damaged wiring connection can generate heat.
An electric power-steering system can develop a fault.
Even something as ordinary as a powered seat can remain running and become hot enough to create a fire risk.
That is why the phrase “the car is switched off” no longer necessarily means “everything inside the car is switched off.”
And that is exactly why millions of drivers are being told:
Park outside. Stay away from buildings. And get the recall repaired.
